One man's
recovery from
Binge Eating Disorder and severe obesity.
There are no magic pills here. I
do not endorse or link to any commercial weight loss products, pills, herbs,
potions, or gimmicks. This web site is about the real work of change, common sense,
good science, and the lifestyle choices we can make to cultivate well-being,
good health, and our quality of life. |

"AN ACTIVE LIFE is not
one of denial and deprivation, or one of pain and suffering. It is a joyful
experience ~ an affirmation of what we can be physically, mentally, socially,
and spiritually. Activity provides energy to begin, the vigor to pursue, and
the vitality to persist. It replaces overindulgence with moderation;
substitutes positive for negative; and yields health, energy and the capacity
to live." ~~Brian J. Sharkey, PHD |

What is a
Healthy Weight?
A “healthy weight” for
an individual cannot be determined by the numbers on a scale or by an ideal
height/weight chart or by using the Body Mass Index or body fat percentages.
Rather, a “healthy weight” is the weight at which a person settles as they
move towards a more fulfilling and meaningful lifestyle—a lifestyle that
includes eating in an unrestrained manner guided by internal cues and
participating in enjoyable, reasonable and sustainable levels of physical
activity. ~~

There is a plethora of pseudo-science and outright scams on the net and in
modern culture where nutrition, supplements, weight loss, fitness, and good health is
concerned. I try to weed out the pseudo-science and base my recovery on current research
that's associated with institutions such as
the health and nutrition departments of large universities and the Mayo Clinic.
I try to ignore sales hype, marketing gimmicks, snake oil remedies, unproven
technologies and magical
thinking and pay attention to cutting edge professionals who publish their
studies in peer reviewed scientific and medical journals—people
and sources that are well respected by leading authorities in the nutrition,
sports physiology, and medical sciences.
