Some products I use |
|
I
think these products taste good and are healthy
|
I
know it can be difficult and expensive to find and try all of
the available healthy food products. Many simply taste so bad
that they won't get used. The following products are
foods that I have come to think taste quite good. They are
made with healthy ingredients, trans-fat free, and
should make a fine addition to a health promoting diet. Many of
these are not necessarily any lower in calories or fat than any
other product, but can be part of a healthy eating plan.
I receive no compensation from the companies that
manufacture these products. I'm simply trying to help direct
people who are trying to improve their health to alternatives
to the highly processed commercial products that they may be
use to. I also feel that this resources page is one small way
to promote healthy products within the food product industry. |
Nancy's Yogurt. I'm
particularly fond of their Nonfat plain yogurt (for cooking) and their Nonfat
single servings with the fruit in a separate cup that has to be combined and
mixed. This is the real deal with no fillers, thickeners, coloring agents, or
weird chemicals. Fully cultured with casei, rhamnosus, acidophilus, bifidum,
thermophilus, and bulgaricus for maximum culture growth. Certified Kosher.
Sweetened with honey. No cane sugar or stabilizers. Family run by the Kesey
family. SPRINGFIELD CREAMERY, Eugene, Oregon

Health Valley®
Soups and Chili.
Their line of fat free soups are the best tasting of the canned natural soups
I've tasted. The "5 Bean Vegetable" is my favorite. Their 99% fat
free vegetarian canned chili comes in an assortment of styles and it quite good.
Most have much lower sodium content than other brands. All are made with organic
and/or natural ingredients. No artificial colors, flavors or preservatives.
Non-GMO. HEALTH VALLEY COMPANY, a division of Hain Celestial Group, Inc.

Earth
Balance®
Natural Buttery Spread. Non-GMO
(genetically-modified organism) 100% Expeller-pressed oils.
Vegan. 440 mg Omega-3 per serving. Works great for cooking,
baking, and spreading. This product is slightly higher in sodium than some
other spreads. Joan from Earth Balance reports, "This product does not contain a
preservative and, in addition to being used as a flavoring agent, the sodium is
used as a preservative. With a lower sodium content, it might quickly develop
mold." GFA BRANDS, Inc.

bionaturæ®
Organic Whole Wheat Pasta. They have a wonderful 100% "Stone Ground" whole
durum wheat Spaghetti that I love. The taste and texture is exceptional. This is
the real deal—traditional old world stuff.
It's delicious even before you add sauce!
Made in Tuscany, Italy.

Smart
Balance®
Buttery Spread.
No hydrogenated oil or trans fatty acids. Natural vegetable oil
blend. Contains some dairy and a preservative but has a lower sodium content
than their Earth Balance spread. I use Earth Balance but in a pinch, this
is miles more healthy than any other commercial spread I've found and tastes quite good
too. GFA BRANDS, Inc.

Foster Farms Chicken.
January 05, Consumer Reports. CR tested 116 samples from widely sold brands of
conventional and organic chickens bought in stores around the U.S. and from a
mail-order company. They tested both liver and muscle, the parts most people
eat. They found no detectable arsenic in the 15 liver samples from Foster Farms,
a conventional chicken brand, and none in the organic chicken samples. I
buy their fresh all natural chicken breasts at Costco. They come ready for use
or the freezer individually wrapped and taste much better than the pre-frozen
boneless skinless chicken breasts. Foster Farms uses no antibiotics in the
chicken feed.

Honeycrisp Apples.
This isn't really a brand, but a type of apple. When I tried my first
ever honeycrisp apple in the fall of 2004, I knew that I'd finally found the
perfect eating apple. A wonderful mixture of sweet and tart, very crisp but not
hard, and the skin is not tough or chewy. These are so delicious that eating one
is a joyful experience to be savored. I found them for sale at the local "New
Seasons" market. All the apples there are organic so they don't have that
disgusting taste and texture destroying wax applied to them to make them shiny.
Honeycrisp apples are not widely grown or distributed at this point. They don't
have the self-life of some apples due to their open cell structure. They are so
very worth seeking out or asking for. You won't regret trying them I'm sure.
