Eating Disorder Resources

National Eating Disorders Association - NEDA is dedicated to expanding public understanding of eating disorders and promoting access to quality treatment for those affected along with support for their families through education, advocacy and research.

Binge Eating Disorder - The Merck Manual of Diagnosis and Therapy, Section 15. Psychiatric Disorders, Chapter 196. Eating Disorders, Seventeenth Edition. Food is nourishment for mind, soul and body. Balance not abstinence is our goal. We encourage our members to work with qualified professionals, such as registered dieticians and therapists trained in treating eating disorders.

Eating Disorders Anonymous - A young 12 Step fellowship that understands eating disorders. EDA endorses sound nutrition and discourages any form of rigidity around food. Food is nourishment for mind, soul and body. Balance – not abstinence – is our goal. Nourishing Connections - Overcome Eating Problems and Weight Struggles. Site run by Karin Kratina, PhD, MPE, RD, LD/N, and Amy Tuttle, RD, LCSW. Site contains very useful tools including journals and hunger/satiety scale you can print out.

Runaway Eating - Runaway Eating refers to milder versions of the clinically-defined eating disorders. It's the gray area between healthy eating and outright anorexia, bulimia or Binge Eating disorder. This site promotes a book that lays out a non-diet plan of recovery. Site offers some very clear basic descriptions of why diets don't work. The authors are recognized experts in nutrition and eating disorders.

Normal Eating - A site dedicated to attuned eating—a non-diet approach that grants freedom from food and weight obsession by looking within. Achieving a normal weight is a by-product of normal eating—not a direct goal.

HUGS International Inc. - Information and resources about lifestyle without dieting. This site promotes  particular books and a program that I have no experience with. The site contains a free book that contains a great deal of useful information about recovery and well-being through a non-diet approach.

Nutrition

MyPyramid.gov - MyPyramid replaces the Food Guide Pyramid introduced in 1992 and is part of an overall food guidance system from the USDA that emphasizes the need for a more individualized approach to improving diet and lifestyle. MyPyramid contains interactive activities that make it easy for individuals to key in their age, gender and physical activity level so that they can get a more personalized recommendation on their daily calorie level based on the 2005 Dietary Guidelines for Americans. It also allows individuals to find general food guidance and suggestions for making smart choices from each food group.

Nutrient Recommendations: Dietary Reference Intakes (DRI) and Recommended Dietary Allowances (RDA) - National Institute of Health, Office of Dietary Supplements. Also see their Dietary Supplement Use & Safety page for more health information regarding supplements.

Tufts University Nutrition Navigator - Designed to help you sort through the large volume of nutrition information on the Internet and find accurate, useful nutrition information you can trust. Sites are reviewed by Tufts nutritionists for relevance and accuracy.

Atkins Facts - An interesting science based and admittedly biased web site about the problems with the Atkins diet.

The Vegetarian Resource Group - Balanced site that promotes and explain vegetarianism without appearing strident or overly political. News, recipes, nutrition information, links, and ideas for those interested in becoming or remaining vegetarians.

The Partnership for Essential Nutrition - a broad-based group of non-profit consumer, nutrition and public health organizations formed to promote programs, policies and research that will advance public understanding about the essentials of a nutritionally balanced diet. Good info on the role carbohydrates, protein, and fat, play in promoting good health and successful weight loss.

FoodNavigator.com - Breaking News on Food & Beverage Development. Interesting articles on current research. Geared toward industry. European perspective. Check out their "Science & Nutrition" section.

The Center for Science in the Public Interest (CSPI) advocates for nutrition and health, food safety, alcohol policy, and sound science. Its award-winning newsletter, Nutrition Action Healthletter, is the largest-circulation health newsletter in North America, providing reliable information on nutrition and health.

NUTRITION PERSPECTIVES - Bimonthly newsletter of the University of California Extension Division. Research-based information on ongoing nutrition and food-related programs.

Health-e-Weight for Women - Brigham & Women’s Hospital. Comprehensive site emphasizing healthful eating, which includes information on weight management, but does not encourage dieting as a means to shed excess fat tissue.

Dole 5-A-Day - An award-winning site that educates kids, parents, and teachers alike about why fruits and vegetables are so good for you.

Ask the Dietitian - Question and Answer site. Database of past questions or ask new questions. Registered and Licensed Dietitian with extensive clinical experience in nutrition counseling.

Omega-3 Information Service - Describes the benefits, dosage and sources of Omega-3 fatty acids.

The Whole Grain - Whole grains for life. All about whole grains: description, health benefits, history. Created by the Grains Institute, a part of the Food Science and Nutrition Department at the University of Minnesota.

The Worlds Healthiest Foods - The George Mateljan Foundation is a non-profit organization with no commercial interests. Their purpose is to show you a healthier way of eating that's enjoyable, affordable, quick and easy to fit your personal needs and lifestyle. Delicious Decisions - American Heart Association. Online heart healthy cookbook and health information.

A Pinch Of... - Make the most of culinary herbs and spices. Though the site is not really about whole natural foods or healthy eating, it's a great place to find information about spices and herbs and how to cook with them. Great for those of us who are choosing to use less salt.

American Dietetic Association - The ADA believes that food and nutrition misinformation can have harmful effects on the health and economic status of consumers. Their members advocate for and promote sound, science-based nutrition information to the public, function as primary nutrition educators to health professionals, and actively counter and correct food and nutrition misinformation. Site contains reliable, objective food and nutrition information.

American Heart Association - Information on cholesterol, high blood pressure, and lifestyle changes for health.

American Sleep Apnea Association - The American Sleep Apnea Association is dedicated to reducing injury, disability, and death from sleep apnea and to enhancing the well-being of those affected by this common disorder. The ASAA promotes education and awareness, the ASAA A.W.A.K.E. Network of voluntary mutual support groups, research, and continuous improvement of care.

Ban Trans Fats: The Campaign to Ban Partially Hydrogenated Oils - A California non-profit corporation whose goal is the reduction and elimination of partially hydrogenated oils from all food products.

PubMed -  PubMed is a service of the National Library of Medicine that includes over 15 million citations from MEDLINE and other life science journals for biomedical articles back to the 1950s. PubMed includes links to full text articles and other related resources.

AARP Be Active For Life Program -

Active at Any Size -  The Weight-control Information Network - U.S. Gov. publication that talks about very heavy people starting an exercise program. I find it a very compassionate and understanding publication and highly recommend it as a starting point. They even use pictures of very heavy people doing the exercises. Many helpful ideas!

American College of Sports Medicine - ACSM advances and integrates scientific research to provide educational and practical applications of exercise science and sports medicine. Science based health and fitness information.

American Heart Association's, Just Move Fitness Center - Resources and tools that can be useful to cultivating a healthy active lifestyle.

Exercise: A Guide From the National Institute on Aging - An excellent manual for anyone who wants to take those first steps toward an active lifestyle. Contains valuable information about how exercise and proper nutrition are crucial for staying healthy as we age and provides useful tips on establishing and maintaining a regular exercise program. Free downloadable 81 page PDF version, online version and video clips, or request one by mail. Weight Loss as main focus

The Skinny Daily Post - Short, daily essays on weight loss and fitness from a really average woman who lost 100 lbs. and works every day to keep it off. Great weekly email newsletter available. Newsletters and public feedback not the usual diet wars, prositalizing, or sales pitch for diet gimmicks. Very intelligent!

The National Weight Control Registry - One of the most popular myths about weight loss is that everyone who loses weight will eventually gain it back. The National Weight Control Registry is a research study which has exploded this myth and shown that successful weight loss is indeed possible. I am a member of the registry.

Normal Eating - "A sane weight loss web site". From the site: "Achieving a normal weight is a by-product of normal eating—not a direct goal. Ironically, when weight loss is a direct goal, it becomes unreachable because focusing on weight loss prevents normal eating".

Friends and personal journeys - Examples of practical weight loss and real progress

Diets Do Not Work - Sensible weight loss based on eating healthy delicious foods and becoming more active. The author of this web site has "been there and done that". She has learned what works and what doesn't through hard won experience. Recipes, blog, progress notes, and wisdom.
